Description
Poetry holds layers of meaning. Reading it is like walking through mountains, sensing shifts in elevation. Metaphor, symbolism, and rhythm give words meanings beyond what is said. I imagine these layers forming a “linguistic terrain” that engages the reader’s senses.
Poetic Hills visualizes this undulation through topography and contour lines, linking the experience of reading with spatial perception. Drawing on a semiotic approach, I classify words into different levels and assign them “heights.” As expected, words that invite broader associations and interpretation rise higher.
These variations form a landscape of meaning. By setting rules for word position, height, and influence, I generate 3D terrains and contour maps for selected poems, offering a new way to observe their structure.
Poetic Hills does not present fixed meanings, but the shifting interplay of them. It focuses on the form itself—the resonance between terrain and perception.
Poetry is not flat; it has a spatial topography.
