- In Japan, byōbu (folding screens) and kakejiku (hanging scrolls) are important traditional art forms and essential elements of Japanese culture. Byōbu, made of foldable panels—often in pairs—were originally used to divide interior spaces or block drafts, but came to be highly valued as artworks for their aesthetic refinement. They are decorated with diverse themes, from landscapes and historical scenes to birds, flowers, and abstract patterns. Kakejiku, on the other hand, serve as a medium for vertically long paintings or calligraphy. Depicting seasonal scenery, poetry, Zen teachings, or classical inscriptions, they embody Japanese aesthetics and philosophy. Both forms exemplify traditional artistic skill and cultural sensibility, expressing the beauty and delicacy of Japan. They can be found in homes, temples, and museums, offering a direct encounter with Japanese history and aesthetics. In this work, I draw from my long-standing practice in film and photography, likening contemporary displays and smartphone screens to byōbu and kakejiku. Reframed through traditional Japanese methods, I present them under the name “Film Craft.” 01 Siren in the Silence Poetic Documentary | 2024 Nature has always sought coexistence. But we have often turned a deaf ear to its call. The “orin” is a traditional Japanese Buddhist bell. When it resonates in nature, it signals a moment to unite hearts and return to purity. Let it ring as a sign of ending conflict. Let it ring as a sign of our transformation. The sound of the orin resounds—calling us to live in harmony with nature. 02 srk Photographic Art|2016 Sharaku, the enigmatic ukiyo-e artist, was active for only ten months yet produced 145 works before vanishing without a trace. His actor portraits, with boldly distorted features and exaggerated expressions and poses, seem ready to spring into motion. Overflowing with vitality, they have captivated audiences not only in Japan but across the world—myself included. Inspired by his unconventional vision, I created srk, a body of work that reflects on the culture of Sharaku’s era and reinterprets it in the present. This series is presented in four styles, from Volume 1 to Volume 4. 03 Forest Xylophone / NTT DoCoMo brand film | 2011 A massive 44-meter-long xylophone was built using thinned timber from a Japanese forest, where a wooden ball rolls downhill, striking Bach’s Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring. The work relies entirely on physical structure and the natural environment, without any CGI or artificial sound effects. The resonance of the ball and the timber echoes through the forest, conveying a pure poetics of coexistence between humans and nature. More than an advertisement, it is an experiment in design, craftsmanship, and the environment—seamlessly integrating sound, space, ecology, and human perception. Upon release, the project drew worldwide acclaim, winning the Cannes Lions Gold and numerous other international awards, and is celebrated as a landmark case of “emotional design” and sustainable communication.
